[Miscellaneous] 2016, you've already got a lot to answer for

2016 is off to a pretty terrible start, and it's barely February.

2015 was a pretty terrible year as far as deaths go. We lost so many of the great and the good, including Sir Terry Pratchett, Leonard Nimoy, Christopher Lee, Cilla Black, and Jonah Lomu. And that's just the people connected with my own interests and hobbies. But January 2016 has just been awful; we've lost three legends to cancer in the space of four weeks.

First was David Bowie, who had been undergoing a private battle with cancer. While not a huge fan of his music, I did quite enjoy some of it, and I could certainly appreciate the influence that he'd had on the industry, not to mention film, television, and fashion.

Then it was Alan Rickman, again from cancer that he had kept private. This one hurt. I've watched Alan Rickman in many good films, and some great ones. Die Hard, Dogma, and of course the Harry Potter series for which he's perhaps most famous. Between them these films showcase his range, his talent, and his screen presence; I now cannot imagine anyone else playing Severus Snape, as his portrayal perfectly fit the mental image that I'd developed after reading the books.

Then yesterday I heard the incredibly sad news that Sir Terry Wogan had died. Again, the dreaded scourge of cancer, and again an illness that had been kept in the family. Sir Terry was the soundtrack to my schooldays in Bedford, as his Radio 2 breakfast show was on every morning in the car. We all loved the mix of music, talk, humour, irreverence, and self-deprecation that embodied the Sir Terry's broadcast, and the day that he retired from presenting the show was a sad one indeed. No other radio show has every been as much of a 'must listen' for me, and no other show can match "Wake up with Wogan" for its audience interaction, or for the number of laugh out loud moments that it produced (Janet and John stories often had me in stitches). I am proud to call myself a TYG, and Sir Terry's sudden passing marks a sad, sad day for the BBC.

January 2016 has been a terrible month. Here's hoping that the rest of the year improves.
