[Music] Bassoon Quartet and Friends
Today was a rather sad day. But also, in another way, a rather awesome one.
At lunchtime today I took part in my last St Andrews Bassoon Quartet concert (or at least, what should be my last one if everything goes to plan). It's been three years since the quartet formed, initially just to do some Christmas busking, and it's been a blast. We've put on some great concerts in that time, and have repeatedly pulled them off with limited, or accelerated, rehearsals. What's more, most of the music has been arranged specially by our members.
For our last concert we decided to do something different, and get some other people involved. It was a 'Bassoon quartet and friends' concert, with us accompanying five soloists on different instruments. We performed with a flautist, a double bassist, a trombonist, a french horn player, and a saxophonist. All were great, and the bassoon accompaniment worked surprisingly well. My two favourite pieces were the John Williams medley that we played with the french horn, and the Monsters Inc. theme that we performed alongside the soprano saxophone - very jazzy!
All in all it was a lovely way to round of three great years with the quartet. I really hope that the group keeps going next year now that it's membership is being cut in half.
If you're interested in hearing the quartet, some of our older concerts are up on our Youtube channel. Hopefully the more recent ones will be going up there soon.
