[Miscellaneous] St Andrews lifesaving pie-off

Last night the St Andrews Lifesaving Club held its annual Pie-Off event. Sounds intriguing doesn’t it? It’s not a complicated event; everyone attending makes at least one pie of some kind (we have a fairly loose definition of ‘pie’) and brings it to the social’s location. We then all eat as much pie as we can, and vote on who made the best one.

We usually have a fairly decent mix of savoury and sweet pies, and this year was no exception. We even had a contribution from one club member who couldn’t actually make it the event! The savoury pies ranged from vegetarian Shepherd’s Pie, to Spicy Chicken Pie, to Tuna Mornay,, whilst the sweet pies saw the traditional, such as Banoffee Pie and Apple Pie, eaten alongside more unusually offerings, such as a traditional Czech dish using shredded apple, raisins, cheese, and toast!

There was also a lot to drink, with several off us enjoying some bottles of wine. Which led to some pretty amusing dancing, and a few headaches the next morning.

It was fairly small event this year, and shorter than in previous years, but still good fun. In the end we voted Hannah’s Spicy Chicken Pie the best, making her the holder of the Pie-Off Spurtle for the second year in a row.

I’m sad that I’ll never experience the Pie-Off again. It’s a great little tradition, and a lot of fun. Every year it makes me think that I should make pie more often, but I never follow through on it. Maybe this year….
