[Sport] NHL Playoffs 2013 - Round 2

Image
[I'm trying out something new for my NHL playoffs series this year. Since there are so many games, I'm going to watch the highlights each day and jot down some thoughts on each one. I'll add a summary of each series once it's decided, and put up the post when the round is complete.] Round 2 has been completed, and it's been an interesting one for the most part. It certainly didn't go according to my predictions!

[Astronomy] Thesis update

Image
Just a quick update today on how my thesis is going. I'm now starting to really get into the writing process, and although I'm trying to do some other work at the same time, I've been able to get a lot done this week. I say I'm trying to do other work as well, but that's going rather poorly to be honest! Since the last time I mentioned my thesis (which was quite a while ago actually), I've modified my plan somewhat. I'm now planning on having eight chapters, having split a couple of them up for brevity. Of those eight, after this week I have 3 that are drafted, and that I'm relatively happy with. I spent most of the week working on my introduction chapter, which is reasonably well sorted now. I took the decision to split off some of the more specialised theory and literature review into the relevant chapters, letting my keep my first chapter more general. I then did some work at the weekend (that wasn't making up for a day off) for the first

[Sport] NHL Playoffs 2013 - Round 2 matchups

Round 1 of the NHL playoffs is over, but there's no let up in the schedule. Round 2 starts tonight, so I thought it would be interesting to look at the matchups and see what's in store for this set of series.

There's been some great ice hockey being played, so how did the series go for the teams that participated? My apologies in advance - Blogger ate some of the game summaries, so there are a few missing.

[Lifesaving] The end of an(other) era.....handover 2013

Image
Last night saw yet another piece of my life here in St Andrews come to an end. After my final quartet concert last month, swiftly followed by my last orchestra concert, it was time to bring my membership of the St Andrews Lifesaving Club, aka the Seacows, to a close. Man am I going to miss this club. (Credit: Teddy Woodhouse) Every year we have a handover meal to mark the end of the current committee's reign, and the commencement of the new committee's term in office. Our AGM is before the Easter holidays, giving plenty of overlap time so that the new committee can learn their roles, and the handover takes place just before the exam period starts.

[Films] Star Trek: Into Darkness

The second of the early blockbuster releases is another sequel, and one that I was even more excited about than Iron Man 3 . In fact I was so excited that I took the chance to go to a midnight release showing (it was totally worth it). The follow-up to the hugely successful reboot of the Star Trek franchise has a lot to live up to. The second instalment in the original series of films was “The Wrath of Khan”, which is widely regarded as the best film starring the original cast. J J Abrams did a good job pleasing both diehard fans and casual viewers with his first film, but how does this one measure up. The official release poster for Into Darkness (Credit: rogerebert.com)
